# Clicking approve is not control

You might know the feeling. You give your agent a task and it gets to work. And then it starts: may I read this file, may I run this command, may I edit this folder? The first few times you read every question carefully. After half an hour you just click through.

In a training course on automation I mentioned that I know plenty of people who go about their whole day like this. Laptop open, and then bam, bam, bam, clicking approve. And honestly, I understand that. But then you have a strange situation. The button that is supposed to protect you is the button you press the fastest.

Copy the briefing at the bottom of this article. With it, you give your agent its boundaries in advance, so it has to ask you less.

## Why all those questions do not protect you

An agent that asks for permission does so for a good reason. It can edit files and run things on your computer, and you need to be able to stop that. Except that protection only works as long as you actually read what it says. Anyone who still says yes to the twentieth question without looking no longer really has control. They only have the feeling of control.

I think that is the real risk. You think you are keeping an eye on things, while you stopped doing that a long time ago. And then one day something slips through that you would never have approved if you had read it. And the more questions it asks, the faster you end up in that rhythm of clicking through.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does my agent ask for permission so often?**

- It can edit files and run things on your computer. Asking for permission is a protection, but it only works if you actually read what you are approving.

**Is it not dangerous to let my agent work without asking questions in between?**

- That depends on your briefing. Establish in advance what it may and may not do, let it show its plan first and check the result thoroughly. For tasks with a lot of risk you keep following every step.

**When can I check less?**

- When you notice that you are no longer making adjustments to a regular task. Then you can switch to spot checks. A new task starts again with strict control.

**Where do I learn to put agents to work safely?**

- In 'AI agents' and 'AI automation with n8n and MCP' you learn hands on how to brief and set boundaries for an agent. You can find all dates at [Workshops & Events](https://coachsteff.live/agenda).
